Haida Roots is a small Seattle based non-profit organization committed to helping preserve Xáad kíl (the Haida language) for future generations.
Our mission is to learn and share our language through stories, songs, and traditional arts taught by our Haida Elders and local artists.
Along with keeping our ancient cultural ways thriving, we support the creative evolution of contemporary music, art & books.
ALWAYS IMMERSED IN OUR CULTURE
At Haida Roots, we keep our ancestral ways alive through strong community ties, creating language learning opportunities, curriculum & literary development, song & dance practice, storytelling, art & traditional regalia making & more.
FLUENT SPEAKER MENTOR PROGRAM
We can count our fluent speakers on one hand. Because of this, we are constantly working towards finding ways to stay connected to our precious elders and learn from them. We keep this goal in mind: 2nd language learners will speak our ancient tongue & will nurture new generations of 1st language Haida speakers.
TRADITIONAL ARTS
Master Haida artists pass their knowledge to the next generations.
